    Chinese Herbal Medicine

Plants have been used by numerous civilisations for thousands of years. There are roughly 300 types of Chinese herbs currently used across the United Kingdom. These include dried leaves, stalks, flowers, roots and seeds.

Each individual herb has specific therapeutic properties which are utilised for a variety of purposes. An experienced doctor will usually prescribe a combination of herbs based on the individual’s clinical condition to produce an optimal and powerful balancing effect.

    Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China for thousands of years. Chinese medicine looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance.

The aim of acupuncture treatment is to re-establish the free flow of vital energy, often referred to as ‘Qi’, to restore the body’s equilibrium and trigger the body’s natural healing response. The use of needles is virtually painless.

I'd been having recurrent attacks of cystitis, a painful bladder infection, for three years, when in 2011, a lab test reported that I had an ESBL infection. My doctor broke the news that there were no more oral antibiotics available in the UK that would work against it. I started to panic as it dawned on me I had a superbug. The only alternative was to order another antibiotic from Germany, called Fosfomycin.

The Cystitis and Overactive Bladder Foundation (COB) was very supportive but at one stage, I had suicidal thoughts. The attacks were excruciating - it felt like I was passing razor blades in my urine and I was forever dashing to the loo. I decided antibiotics weren't the best long-term solution and I found Dr. Hung at my GP surgery. She prescribed 'killer' herbs to kill off E.coli bacteria and 'tonifying' herbs to build my immunity.

I was desperate to recover my health and have been seeing her for two years now and haven't had an attack since. I'm also having acupuncture and I take 2g of vitamin C daily. Hopefully, my immune system will eventually be strong enough to fight off the E.coli on its own. My GP has been very non-committal about it, but it's working better for me than antibiotics.

    Clinical Experience with Stroke Patients

For seven years, I worked as a doctor in the Department of Acupuncture at Longhua Hospital, Shanghai University of TCM. Longhua is a leading university hospital, reputed in China for its Traditional Chinese Medicine faculty. Our work in the department included clinical practice, teaching and research. In our Department, over 20% of outpatients and 50% of inpatients were diagnosed with a cerebrovascular accident and suffered stroke-induced conditions such as paralysis, visual impairment, speech and swallowing problems etc. Acupuncture was usually selected as the primary choice for managing these conditions. We started daily treatment 3-7 days after an ischemic stroke or two weeks, if after a hemorrhagic stroke.

Our clinical observations were published in China alongside a few government funded research groups, which had monitored thousands of patients. The reports concluded that acupuncture provides significant benefits in physical functioning and recovery. Our work at Longhua hospital demonstrated that stroke patients who are treated by acupuncture in the first 12 months post-stroke recover faster, perform better and require less rehabilitation therapy. The earlier it is performed, the better. Ultimately, the treatment results in less distress, burdens and expense for families. Acupuncture is a safe treatment when performed by a formally trained medical doctor. During my time at Longhua hospital, I did not hear of a single accident related to acupuncture treatment. The risk of the treatment is very low when considering the fact that our department treated over 100,000 outpatients and discharged hundreds of inpatients each year.
